US Government Information - I think someone is using my address to receive a check.

Expert: Darlene Oldendick - 3/2/2009

Question
Good day,

Recently I lost my job due to company going under.  I filed for unemployment benefits.  I am not sure but I think I overheard a family member saying that my in laws are pretending to live in my house to help draw them extra money.  They actually live with another person who draws social security and if they consider all the real members living there it will hurt their benefits.  I am not ok with this.  Won't the government find out that THEY are lying since I have applied and used MY address to get unemployment?  Do you think this will delay my benefits or get me in trouble because they are being dishonest?  Again it is a family member and due to circumstances I cannot control it.

Answer
You should report this fraud to the OIG Hotline.  Use the link below to get the information needed to make the report.  I doubt it will cause you any problem with your unemployment. The report can be made as an anonymous informant.

Hope this helps,
Darlene
