US Government Information - Federal Government Income

Expert: Eric Shangle - 10/29/2007

Question
Wow Eric, I reviewed my question and thought it was pretty straight forward but let me try this: What is the U.S. Government's total income per year and how much of that is from Federal Income Taxes?

Answer
Nick,
I guess I wasn't exactly sure where you were going with this in terms of "income".  Basically what I think you are looking for is how much money the federal government takes in each year...and more specifically how much of that is from the IRS.

The US government operates on a fiscal year.  This year is from October through September each year.  Anyway, at the end of September 2007, the following information was available (taken from the Treasury Dept).  This information is in billions.

Individual Income Taxes: $1163 (43)
Social Insurance Tax and Contributions:  $870 (32)
Corporate Income Taxes:  $370 (13)
Other Taxes: $165 (6)
Total:  $2568 (94)

The federal deficit is 6.

Two great sites that I actually look at are as follows:
http://www.federalbudget.com/ (This one is kind of cheesy, but it's good.)

http://www.budgetanalyst.com/ (This is an AMAZING site that has all the information on the budget process you could ever want.)

I hope that this helps.
Eric
