US Government Information - US Gov: Republican or Democratic?

Question
Hi,
As a Canadian student, I'm not very well educated about the American Government, but slowly I'm learning bit by bit.  I've heard of different types of governments: monarchy, communism, dictatorship, democracy, the republic, etc.  I always thought of the US as a democracy, but it is currently lead by the Republican party.  Can you clear this up for me please?

Thank you,
Greg.

Answer
Greg,
Yes, there are different types of governments.  The United States was founded on the ideals of democracy.  We still consider ourselves a democratic society.  Within our society we have many different types of political parties.  The two main parties are the democrats and the republicans.  Neither of their party names have anything to do with what they believe in.

The republican party is consider to be our conservative party.  The democrat party is considered to be more liberal.  Again, don't let their party names fool you.  They have NOTHING do with the democracies and republics.

I hope that this clears this up for you.  I suggest you read more about the political parties in the US if you want more information.
Good luck.
Eric
