US Government Information - The number of federal judges

Expert: Eric Shangle - 4/21/2007

Question
Mr. Shangle:

I'm trying to find out the number of federal judges, who are currently on the bench, who have been appointed by Republican U.S. presidents. This would include, not just Supreme Court judges but also district court, appellate court, etc. I'm trying to find out the total number of judges and then determine the percentage that have been appointed by Republican presidents.

Any information you could give me about this question would be GREATLY appreciated. Also, if you're able to locate this information could you also please cite your sources?

Thank you so much for your time,

Jefferson George

Answer
Jefferson,
Thank you for writing.  You ask a great question.  Unfortunately this is outside of my area of expertise.  I did do  quick google search and found the following site:  http://www.eriposte.com/law/judiciary/judiciary.htm

This does give some of the information you are looking for.  I don't about the validity of the sources though.

I wish you the best of luck.  In circumstances like this, where the question is outside of my expertise, I don't usually like to provide too much information.  Being that I am only doing google searches, it doesn't make me an expert.  I hope you understand.

Thank you again.
Eric
