About Ken Humphries
Expertise
I have only four geat danes now, all fawn, although I have had brindles in the past. I have had them for 34 years and am an international judge of danes, I breed them occasionally and show them most weekends. I also organise seminars and lecture on Kennel Club regulations, how to judge dogs, canine anatomy, movement and stewarding at shows. I am on the committees of National Working & Pastoral Breeds, Midland & West of England Great Dane Club organising shows and I was chairman of Stratford Canine Society.

Experience
I have had up to 20 great danes at any one time, fawn, brindle and blue,in the past. I have had them for 34 years and am an international judge of danes, I have judged the championship show of the Great Dane Club of South Australia. I breed them occasionally and show them most weekends. I also organise seminars for novice judges and instruct them on Kennel Club regulations and construction and movement. A dane we bred and that I showed took the best dog award at Crufts.

Question
I recently got a GD pup and he is now 4-5 months old. In the past two days he has shown signs of a sore back leg. It gets worse after exercise. I am not aware of an injury although he does knock himself about with our other dogs (Basset is his bestest friend). Is their a supplement I can give him to aid bone/joint developent - here in darkest Africa!! - and/or should I encourage exercise eg abt 15 mins a day running around? I am not about to get X-rays done. I am feeding a good quality "vet approved" feed. Maybe there are generic things I could add?

Answer
Restrict exercise for the first year!

'Vet Approved' only means they are getting a good profiton the food.  The food we use costs £9 per 20 kg bag whereas Eukanuba and Hills is apporaching £50.  Our dogs are show dogs and have to be in peak condition.

18-20% protein is high enough, no supllements needed.  Which part of darkest Africa.  Contact your local dane club, I know there is one in RSA, I have judged for them.
