How to Have a Great Date - Conversation tips

Expert: Megan - 8/15/2003

Question
I am wondering what are some good topics to discuss on a first date?  Are there topics which are a good idea to avoid?

I am self-conscious and shy, and always have a hard time being able to hold a conversation. How can we avoid those akward pauses?  Thanks.

Answer
Hey Lisa! Starting a conversation seems like the most difficult thing in the world but if you follow some basic guidelines and practice socializing, it will become a lot easier. After you get, "Hi, how are you?" out of the way,
make a comment about a piece of clothing, a movie you're watching, or a class you share together. Those topics can lead to other conversations naturally. Otherwise, here are some basic questions you can ask to get a conversation rolling:

What do you do for a living?
What are your hobbies?
Do you have any siblings?
What kind of music do you like?
Do you play any instruments?
Do you play any sports?

Only avoid topics if they seem uncomfortable with your date or if you get overly excited about them. For example, if you're passionate about politics, you might avoid that subject unless they bring it up. In addition, discussing past relationships, sexual stories, and family issues are inappropriate. I'm sure you won't have any difficulties in discussing the wrong thing, especially since you're self-concious and shy. :)
Whenever those awkward pauses arise, think of 1 of the suggested questions or something similar to it. Or you can always comment on your surroundings; the food is good, the weather is nice, or compliment your date. Those topics usually get the conversation flowing again.
I hope I helped and good luck!
