Subject: getting around interisland by ferry or flight?

Question
Hey Denny, thanks for your service in advance..my question - will be
travelling interisland from August 5-17 this year Santorini, Crete and would
like to add Lesvos but finding it difficult to get there..flights? vs. long
complicated ferry routes?..seems as if one always needs to return to Athens to
get someplace else..any ideas?..by the way will be starting in santorini
already have that ferry booked..leaving there on the 8th do we go to crete
then lesvos? or is lesvos too far and we should opt for another island?(looking
to go to an island with hot springs) thanks.

Answer
Yiasou Heather, thanks for the question,

and a good question it is !

Getting to LESVOS (Mitilini) from CRETE is NOT an easy task!

About the shortest route and most costly is to fly to Athens
and then on to Lesvos.  That is on Olympic or Aegean air.
(similiar prices) I would say 200-euro altogether.  Ask your agent for exact prices on that (perhaps you can get a Heraklion to Lesvos
...with a change of planes in Athens which might cost a bit less).

Get one-way ticket and then return to Athens from Lesvos via the ferry.  (about 35-40 euro)12-hrs.

AS you have stated...ferry route is not good nomatter how you go out of Crete...

However if you DO want to save euros, probably the cheapest way and fastest other then flight is this way:
*** CRETE to PIRAEUS (overnite) out of Heraklion. Board about 1900.(7-hr)(30-euro)then PIRAEUS to LESVOS ...board almost as soon as you get to Piraeus.  = Ask purser on ferry out of Crete if they know what dock you go to for the ferry for Lesvos (Mitilini).
12-hr (37-euro)***

You will see alot of the Med, sleep on board avoiding a hotel bill,
and since you do have 12-days, you do have enough time for it.

Hope you take it in consideration as LESVOS is a great place to spend some time.  I like it more the Crete.  (Crete is very large and you will need a rental car to get around=about 35-euro a day)
