Question
Hi Denny,

I will be in Turkey, Greece and Egypt in mid May and I am really puzzled about how I can get myself onto Santorini from Izmir (my last stop in Turkey is Ephesus). I thought since Ephesus is nearer to the port, I should be able to get myself to Santorini then take a ferry to Athens.

But I realized there is no direct ferry to Santorini, even from Istanbul. Am I right? Now, I just want to get to Santorini from Turkish port with max 1 stop (hopefully Mykonos)..

Please enlighten me as I only have 5 days in Greece (3 days in Santorini and 2 days in Athens including travelling). I dont want to waste too much time island-hopping as Greece is supposed to be a relaxing break between Turkey and Egypt.

Help!

Answer
Yiasou Wendy Lin, thankyou for the question.

From EPHESUS (or Izmir) you can catch a bus to KUSHADASH.  This is
the closest PORT that will take you accross the short span of water into and onto Greek soil ... island of SAMOS.

Get there either early in the morning (best time) about 0700 or
around 1600 (5pm) in the afternoon.  You then will not wait long
for a ferry. Allow about an hour travel to SAMOS.

From SAMOS there are ships that go to many places.  There is a daily
to PAROS that will take about 8-hours.  Then you can hopefully catch
a connection to Santorini the same evening (3-hours) ... Figure about
45-euro for these two vessels.  [about  30 and 15 respectively].  Seating is open on both (NO reservation needed... buy ticket at port of SAMOS and board an hour ahead to get a good seat spot...deck or otherwise]

There is another ferry out of SAMOS that goes directly to MYKONOS.
It does NOT run everyday.  Same pricing and time frame for
this ferry.  However by the time you get to Mykonos you will have arrived too late for the 2PM boading for the superferry to Santorini, and you WILL have to remain overnite on Mykonos...which is
NOT bad and should be wonderful in May.  The Superferry to
Santorini from Mykonos requires a reservation and costs about 40-euro
for the 3-hour trip.

I should have more info on schedules for this year in a week or two,
so you might want to check back, or IF I remember, I will send you a
followup ...  however, since I don't get paid for this info, I do not keep very good records and alot of people are beginning to ask alot of questions.

Good luck
Calh taxiedi
Denny
