Question Hi! Planning to spend approx 2 weeks in greek islands end of aug 2010 traveling in and out of athens with 17 yr old daughter. We want to spend approx 6 days in santorini. We would love advice as to what other islands to consider( we love great beaches) , most importantly in which order as to end up back in athens. Better to do santorini by flight first? is there ferry or flights to others ending up back in Athens? Also do you recommend hotel in fira or oia, we would love traditional cave in cliffs type hotel.
THANKS SO MUCH!!!!
Answer Yiasou Lori, Thanks for the question,
First ... here is a site that can help you with all things Greek, especially
ATHENS (in, out & around) ... www.athensguide.com/practicalinfo. Go there,
"klik" onto the section you wish to know about and then check it out.
IE: FERRY SCHEDULES ... bottom of page and will among other comments, show
you WHAT is departing Athens out of ports of Piraeus & Rafina for the upcoming week.
Schedule in August will be more extensive then the current (October) one. Also
ferry to SANTORINI is usually referred to as 'THIRA' (port of Santorini).
Now anywhere and anything in August in Greece will be quite busy and even the
very large 'NO RESERVATION NEEDED' ships (Car Ferrys) should be checked out a day
or so in advance just to make sure you can get on and then get off in Santorini.
= which means you will have to have a LODGING reservation on Santorini. =
Don't try to go there in August without one ... not if you plan to stay there
for a week !
There certainly are alot of HOTELs to choose from, some (lots achually) between
200 and 500 euro for a double for one nite. Also PENSIONs, where doubles can be
as low as 50-euro a nite.
I will have to yield to a couple of fine & friendly agencies located on the island
(Santorini & Mykonos) for more info/prices and much more on the type of lodging
you wish ... www.pelican.gr (great for ferry reservations/prices/tickets and tours)
...rita@windmillstravel.com or simply www.windmillstravel.com (specializing in room accomodations).
FLYING: In AUGUST I would say you are looking at 120-euro for a one way ticket aboard
Olympia or Aegean Airlines to Santorini. About an hour flight. Reserve month
in advance.
FERRYS out of PIRAEUS to Santorini (Thira) go daily ... even at this late in the season
there are a couple in the morning and a couple in the evening. So whatever is more
convenient for you ... If you go at nite you 'save' a nites lodging by spending
the nite on board, either inside or on deck. And in August ... on-deck is a good
option ! (Takes 8 to 12 hours depending on stops it makes at other islands on the way
... cost is 33-euro for the CAR FERRY types; NO reservation required = open seating =.
FASTER Vessels require reservations and cost over 50-euro but take only about
5-hours.
OUT OF SANTORINI some of the islands to head for that have wonderful beaches are:
PAROS, NAXOS, Mykonos and then return to ATHENS.
Or you could combine one or more of those very popular islands with lesser traveled
but very nice as well ... Folegandros, Kithnos or Milos ... then onto Naxos and or
Mykonos before going back to Athens.
The islands are all wonderful ... some are more popular then others because over the
years their 'PR' is better and they DO have better nite-life (Mykonos/IOS)
or fantastic/awesome beauty (Santorini). or are noted for ancient sites (Santorini/
Mykonos [Delos]; Or are super islands such as Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, that have their
own industries apart from just tourism.
For the most part however the islands are basically similiar ... The tavernas,
food, beverages, music, lodging, beaches, hiking, camping the people...
the enjoyment will be there whichever island you go to ...
From your starting point ... SANTORINI ... located at the far end of the Cycladic
chain of islands, there are daily ferries to many islands ... PAROS, CRETE, MYKONOS
Folegandros, Sifnos. You should have no trouble leaving the island to continue your
explorations. However...flying ??? either Athens, Thessalonika and charters from
outside Greece are about it.
Check out the sites I gave you and if you have anything more to ask, please do ...
you still have about 10-months or so befor you leave.
