Question
My family called Aphrodite in Greek my name on my birth certificate is Rita. Is there a connection? Also how would you spell both names in Greek. Thank you

Answer
Hello Rita,

there is no linguistic connection between the two names; Rita is a short form of Margherita, meaning "pearl" in Italian. Aphrodite is a Greek name meaning "she who came out of the foam". There is, though, a connection in a more literary approach, due to pearls being found in sea-shells and Aphrodite being born in the sea. Nothing more.

Here is each spelling:

Rita = Ρίτα / Margherita = Μαργαρίτα
Aphrodite = Αφροδίτη

Good luck and have a nice day.

Cordially,
Michael
