Growing Vegetables - bell peppers

Expert: Don Battales - 6/23/2009

Question
This is the first time I have grown bellpeppers.  My plants look great and they have bloomed but have produced no peppers.  Some of the blooms have began to fall off but there are still several blooms.  I live in Lexington, TN which is in the West Tennessee area.  My mother-in-law lives directly across the street from me and she has had several bellpeppers to produce for 2 or 3 weeks now.  I have been using Miracle Grow for vegetables on my plants.  Why do I not have any peppers producing?  How long does it normally take for bellpepper plants to produce?

Answer
Johnny:

I believe you have a fungus that causes blossom drop. You need to buy a general fungicide and try it on your plants.

I am also concerned that they are not pollinating which causes lack of fruit production. Try fertilizing them around the roots every 15 days it may be that your nitrogen is not enough. Butterflies and bees help do the pollinating.

Do not over water. About every 3 days should be enough.

Hope this will be of some help to you.

Best wishes.

Don
