Question
I am growing acorn squash for the first time.I have 2 plants that are prolific, I have a lot on both plants at different stages of growth A couple squash are dark green and the size they should be.  How do I know when they are ripe?, Should they have orange patches on the rind, I see that in the store sometimes?   Thank you.

Answer
Dear Micki,
Those are the most difficult squash for me to tell when they are ripe, because their color really doesn't change that much.  Although some people pick them green, I wait for a patch or two of orange, but not too much orange.
Enjoy!  Squash is one of my favorites!
Kind Regards,

Expertise

I can answer questions about natural gardening. We refer to our type of gardening as Orthodox organic. We do not use chemicals of any kind for pest control or plant growth. I can offer information regarding the growth of herbs and spices, as well. I can also share some canning and freezing tips for enjoying home grown vegetables year round. Growing vegetables provides healthy benefits for the body and the mind.

Experience

We live on what I believe is now termed a hobby farm. We are Messianic missionaries and raise all of our own vegetables, and some fruit. The change in the grocery budget is absolutely amazing.
