Growing Vegetables - Leeks

Expert: Don Battales - 9/24/2009

Question
Last year and again this i have a problem with growing leeks. On both occasions they have rotted about the beginning of September.I avoided the same plot this from last year but again i had the same problem.I found a small grub this year inside the stem of leek itself.I cannot find anything relating to this in any gardening books

Answer
Brian:

I believe that you next year you need to try new leek seeds that are hybrid and desease resistant.

Don't belive that the grub is your problem. I think that your problem is a fungus in the soil. As you have changed locations each year you still have this problem.

For next year till the soil early and try to fumigate it and kill any bad things that might be there. A good hard freeze will help this problem.

I don't think that I have been very much help to you but please try again next year.

E-mail me next year and let me know if the plants are OK. don@donsfoods.com

Best wishes.
