Guatemala/beaches

QuestionI came across this very informative website and am delighted. I am a hard working grad student of Chinese medicine, and I have a few days off. I would love to go somewhere near a beautiful beach to unwind, and I am very attracted to Guatemala for cultural reasons as well. Can you recommend a beach destination for someone such as myself? thank you!
AnswerHi Deirdre,
I am so glad you asked that question!
My husband, myself, and a group of friends just came back from a three day trip to one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen. There are very few black sand beaches in the world, one of them is on Guatemala's Pacific coastline where you'll find a town called Monterrico. It's about two and a half hours away from Antigua. I think it's just what you're looking for and there isn't a better time of year to visit.
The word has finally gotten out about this quiet secluded paradise. It's still lazy through the week, but on the weekend people from Guatemala city, as well as jet setters from all over the world flock here to enjoy the warm water, black sand, beautiful sunsets and cheap pina colada.
You mentioned Guatemala "for cultural reasons." Monterrico is still virtually unspoiled by modern day civilization. The drive there is beautiful, we even spotted an elephant or two on the way, (wildlife sanctuary) and they've finished the bridge, so you no longer have to take a ferry to get to the island.
When I say virtually unspoiled by modern day civilization, don't think there's nothing to do. If you're just looking to unwind Monterrico is famous for it's hammocks and relaxing beaches.
If you're looking for a little more, the coastline of Monterrico offers whales, dolphins and other amazing sea creatures for your viewing pleasure. You can also visit one of the many sanctuary and volunteer your time to the plight of the sea turtles. Without the help of the locals and tourists the sea turtles could be wiped out due to the illegal trade in sea turtle eggs. The photo opportunities are never ending.
The Hotel Utz Tzaba is right on the beach. With It's thatched roof bar, restaurant, and rooms surrounding two very inviting pools and a hot tub it's awesome. The employees are top notch, as well as it's international menu. The rooms rent for USD$ 65.00 per night, breakfast is included and they take visa. I can't say enough about the great atmosphere or their mouthwatering seafood.
If you Google the hotel name you should be able to get more information.
A word to the wise. Do not venture far into the ocean, even a strong swimmer can drown. The currants are very strong. A light sweater for the evening would be a plus as well as a can of mosquito repellent. You will also want to leave early in the morning to get there. You should never drive at night in Guatemala and you never know if, when, or where you might breakdown.
Guatemala is a beautiful country, there is so much to see and do. I hope you'll make it a point to come back in the future when you have more time to experience all the wonderful things it has to offer.
Can I ask if you'll be coming alone or with friends so I might suggest transportation?
If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask. If not have a wonderful trip!
