About Nicole Bury
Expertise
I can answer every question anyone has! I am always willing to hit the books for other owners! I and my husband between me have 6 guinea pigs and one expecting, that we intend to keep 2 of. I can help with idle questions, everyday problems to serious health problems but I always sugget seeing a vet!

Experience
I have had 14 guinea pigs in my life with more to come. I have volunteered at the local shelter just to work with the small animals on a weekly basis and I have been to countless vets to soak up there advice, as well as looking in my 50 something books on guinea pigs. I know almost everything I can wrap my head around about guinea pigs! Sometimes my husband, who is an exotic bird vet/guinea pig fanatic helps me with the questions to!

Organizations
I belong to S.A.R.S. BC. It stands for Small Animal Rescue Shelter.

Publications
The Vancouver sun.

Education/Credentials
I have taken community courses for pet care, including small animals, but I have not been to school formal education (I am not a vet). Currently I am in the process of becoming a published author and I have my degree in creative writing. Someday I will have my masters. I teach local classes for advanced creative writing and literature for teens.

Awards and Honors
I have had my writing published in the paper for the fourtenth time about animal pet care facts. Nothing big, just me and a few other writers.

Guinea Pigs - Guinea Pig Death

Expert: Nicole Bury - 11/13/2009

Question
Hello,

My husband and I had two female guinea pigs (Spice and Lillie) that we purchased about a month apart, however Lillie was six months younger than Spice.  They were both well taken care of, happy and healthy.  Tonight when we got home my husband went to check on them and they were both dead by their food bowl.  We had not done anything differently nor have we had anything different in our apartment recently.  They were moving around their cage this morning before we left for work.  The only different thing we did was purchase a well known brand of national food since the local pet food store was out of the kind we usually purchase.  We did figure our piggies were about four years old but we also found it highly unlikely for them to both have a health problem and die at the same time by the food bowl.  With the tainted pet food that has been on the news we are wondering if our piggies could have eaten some of it?  If not then why would they die the same day both by the food bowl?  My husband and I both have Master's degrees but our little piggies death has both of us pulled with unanswered questions.  Any ideas or suggestions you have would be appreciated.

Thank You,
Jo

Answer
Hello Jo!
Wowza! That must have been quite sad for you both, Im sorry!
It could be that they ate something and I have found that when multiple piggys die at the same time, poison is the #1 or #2 possible cause. If the brand you used is the brand they re-called then I say, blame that. I do not know of much else that could have done this to them. All I can say for sure is that heaven accepted two more angels last night.
