Experience
I have had 7 guinea pigs in my life with more to come. I know almost everything I can wrap my head around about guinea pigs!

Education/Credentials
I have taken community courses for pet care, including small animals, but I have not been to school formal education (I am not a vet). Currently I am in the process of becoming a published author and I have my degree in creative writing. Someday I will have my masters. I teach local classes for advanced creative writing and literature for teens.

Awards and Honors
I have had my writing published in the paper for the seventh time about animal pet care facts. Nothing big, just me and a few other writers.

Guinea Pigs - Guinea Pig illness

Expert: Nicole Bury - 11/6/2009

Question
Hi there, We have a 3 1/2yr old female guinea %26 just recently has been poorly with what we thought was a urine infection as she had the same symptoms as our other guinea had a few months ago with being very wet underneath %26 smelly, the vet put her on antibiotics but it didn't clear up so some more antibiotics, she did improve but has now gone back abit with a enlarged vulva %26 what i think is cystitis as upon reading up on it this seems to be what she has. I have introduced cranberry juice to the water bottle but i am so terrified that she is going to die!! we are really fond of both our guineas %26 our vet is what my girls have named him "DR Death" as he isn't very encouraging to any illness so am reluctant to take her back if he says he has to out her down!! Please can you re-assure us that what we are doing will help her, I regularly bath her to keep her clean etc %26 she is eating normally.  Thank you.  kind regards  the Dorey family

Answer
Hello Audrey & Family!
I think I know what may be the problam, but it is a little bit of a downer. You see, I had a guinea pig named Rhinestone. Rhinestone played and ate just fine but was constantly wet underneath. She got to a point thatshe squeled in agony while urinating, so the family decided that it was time to put her down. The thing is though, that unlike other familys we got our vet to do an 'autopsy' on her body. It was found that although she had a happy life, she was in agonizing pian. She had cancer in her ovarys that had grown in to break her bladder. I was heartbroken.
With that story still, 8 years later almost bringing me to tears ill say that the point of it was not to say "chuck her, shes good as dead" but to say that putting her down after a certian point should be niether at the front or back of your thoughts. In the middle, just in case.
I also tryed barley water. You know, a certain amount of barley per water and then you microwave it. Strian the barley and give the GPs the water. Rhinestone ddnt like it much though.
After that Im stumped. Just try being the best owners you can be and love her with all your hearts. Your doing great, keep up the good work.

(PS: GET A NEW VET! AN EXOTIC BREED VET!)
