Guinea Pigs - Guinea Pig

Expert: Aleksandra Gawor - 6/29/2009

Question
My guinea pig is almost 1 1/2 yrs old and about a couple of months ago broke both his bottom front teeth; they grew back within a week and all I needed to do during this time was to feed him manually. However, last night I noticed he wasn't taking his carrot again so I checked his teeth. His bottom teeth were fine but his left top tooth is broken down by the gums and the right top one is loose but still there. I don't have enough to take him to the vet but want to know if I should be doing something different than the last time this happened. I took out his salt lick but also I don't understand why this has happened now for a second time when his diet has not changed at all since he was a couple months old (aside from an increase in food and water). I've kept the same brand of pellets, hay, and carrots that he's had since then. Please help so I can try to prevent this from happening again and help him heal this time. Thank you. ---J

Answer
Hello,
Your guineas teeth might be too long thats why they keep breaking, I know you don't have much time but I would suggest taking him to the vets as your guinea does sound like hes in pain as he is not able to eat. Try feeding you guinea softer food or put the food through the blender first so the pieces are smaller for you guinea to eat. Make sure there aren't any places in the cage where your guinea can get his teeth caught in. A log might also be helpful to wear down his teeth (apple log would be the best)
Sorry I couldn't be of more help
