Guinea Pigs - why so noisey?

Expert: Aleksandra Gawor - 6/30/2009

Question
I have a 6 month old female piggy named Gloria, she lives outside and becomes very vocal of a night and when we hold her. she has plenty of warm bedding and gets fresh veggies every day so wats up with her?

Answer
Hello,
Guineas make alot of noise so I wouldn't worry about doing anything wrong. Unless your guinea emits a high loud shriek on a falling note which would indicate your guinea is hurt. Guineas make lots of different sounds such as...
1. A low bubbly murmuring when there are chomping through goodies
2. A 'wheeping' sound, they keep this up until they have got what they want. It is usually a demanding sound
3. A lower 'wheeping' is made by cavies greeting eachother
4. And and even lower 'wheeping' is made when you attempt to touch a guinea who doesn't want to be picked up or touched.
I hope this helps
