About Lorena Kerr Expertise I can answer all questions regarding guinea pig selection, breeding, care, housing, showing, and minor medical needs. I am especially knowledgeable in the teddy and teddy satin breeds, although I have experience with all other breeds as well.
Experience I have kept guinea pigs as pets for over twelve years. As well, I have been a breeder and taken guinea pigs/cavies to shows. I have had several guinea pigs become ARCBA (American Rabbit and Cavy Breeders Association) grand champions.
Question I got a young, female guinea pig this summer, and have had her living with an older male. It's been almost four months, and she's now six months old. I think she might be pregnant. How can I tell?

Well, the easiest way to tell if a guinea pig is pregnant is by palpating. Here's how: first, gently roll the sow onto her back, with her head away from you. Make sure you take care to support her head and shoulders.
Next, with the thumbs or index fingers, gently feel the lower abdomen (stomach). What you are feeling for is two hard, egg-shaped lumps. If you feel these, she is most likely pregnant. If you have any concerns about doing this yourself, a reputable breeder or vet can help you.
Hope this is helpful. If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact me again. Good luck!
