Guitar - General - guitar notes

Expert: Lynne May - 10/7/2009

Question
Hi, I'm new to playing the guitar and I'm not really sure how to explain my problem, but if the guitar sounds an octave lower than written and you have for example middle c written, do you play the string that is called middle c, or do you play the note that will actually sound as middle c? I'm sorry if I'm not making sense, I'm not quite sure how to put this.

Answer
Hi, Liz--

When you see the note "Middle C" written, play the note that is on your 5th string,
3rd fret.

There is a chart of the notes in 1st position at:
