Guitar - General - leslie affect

Expert: Lynne May - 11/7/2009

Question
Hello. I am trying to learn a song on the guitar. While I was reading the piece I came across something called a Leslie Affect (sp?). Could tell me about it and what guitarist have used it?

Answer
Hi, Duane--

The Leslie was a speaker system used extensively in the 1970's on Hammond Organs. It utilizes a revolving horn and bass baffle to reproduce the "Doppler" effect. This speaker system has been hooked up to guitars in some cases. Some examples are "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" by The Beatles, "Black Hole Sun" by Soundgarden, and "Layla" by Derek and the Dominoes.

You can get somewhat the same effect a lot more simply by using a "Chorus" effects pedal.

By the way, have you checked out our "Absolutely Free Guitar Lessons"?

You can find a detailed discussion of guitar effects pedals as well as other extremely helpful information to help you improve your playing.

Best Wishes,
