Guitar - General - Tuning

Expert: Frank A Dornay Jr - 6/10/2009

Question
Hi
I've just recently begun playing guitar and I can't seem to get it tuned. It can
with a cd to tune it along too and I've tried to use the online guitar tuner but
the guitar couldn't reach those notes. Are there any tips you can give me to
tune this thing. Also it's a really cheap first act guitar from walmart if that
helps.

Answer
Hello, Ivuoma!

New strings on a guitar take a little bit of effort to tune, so if they happen to become in tune, then fall flat, it's completely normal.  If you can get at least your A string in tune, you can tune from there using the fifth fret on strings Low E through G, the fourth fret tuning the B, and back to the fifth fret to tune the High E.  Are you trying to tune the strings to notes higher than they should? Try tuning the Low E string to slack, then tune it up until the note sounds like what it should be on the internet.  I'm not sure how old the strings are, but if they are not in that good of condition, it may be time to replace them as well. Just some things to think about.  Hope I have helped! Good luck!
