About Jim Garber
Expertise

I can answer most questions on fretted instruments, my main area of expertise is in vintage mandolins, guitars and ukuleles. I also know some things about old banjos as well.

I can also answer some questions about mandolin technique and since there is no separate mandolin category, I figure they might be asked under guitar.

I have decided to no longer evaluate instruments -- it is very difficult without the instrument in hand. For guitars and some other American fretted instruments, I recommend the Vintage Guitar Price guide. Also, be aware that most insurance companies want written appraisals so my valuation would not work anyway.

It also truly helps if you can includes a clear photo of your instrument. I think the site will only allow for one photo, but you can email me additional ones to jimg@paperclipdesign.com. I will try to evaluate but there are times that it is impossible without the instrument in hand

NOTE: I have decided that I will mostly answer questions about vintage instruments, generally before 1940. You can send me questions about contemporary guitars, but most likely I will send them to the question pool if I feel that I cannot answer them without extensive research.

Guitar - General - Gibson J-35 guitar

Expert: Jim Garber - 7/13/2009

Question
I have inherited what I believe to be a 1940 Gibson J-35 guitar.  Serial # 3799G followed by a red number 40.  What is the approximate value?  It appears to have a mahogany side and back and spruce top and has a beautiful sound.

Answer
Thanks for the pictures. It looks like you do have a J-35. They are highly desirable guitars. Book value in excellent, all-original condition is $8000-10,000. It looks like yours is in pretty good shape with the exception of the tuning buttomns which do deteriorate over time. You can get repro buttons or have a good repair person install them. The only other thing I see from the photos is that there may have been some work done on the top at one time, maybe a crack or separation.

In any case, I would take it to a good repair person and give it a once over. Sometimes the internal braces come unglued or there may be other things to look for. I would do this before stringing up to full tension, unless you have experience with vintage guitars like this one.

Hi Ed:
I hesitate to say with any definiteness that you have a J-35. perhaps you have a few other pictures? That back could be almost any guitar.

If it is indeed a genuine Jumbo 35/J-35 than you have a nice valuable instrument esp if it is in excellent condition and all-original.

Send more pics to me at jimg@paperclipdesign.com

best
Jim
