About Bill Ruxton Expertise What kind of old guitar do I have? Is it valuable? How old is it? Where was it made? Is it worth repairing? Advice on buying new or used guitars, accessories, etc. [Note: While I can give some general info on approximate values of types of instruments, neither I nor anyone else can do an "appraisal" without actually seeing and handling the instrument] I have almost 40 years` experience as a player and afficianado. If I don`t have an answer myself, I can often refer people to other authoritative sources.
Question I have an Alvarez acoustic with laser cut rosette sound holes up by the neck on the left and right side. All I know is that it was made for St. Louis Music by Alvarez/Yairi. The serial number is 087837. Anything at all would be much appreciated. The rich tone and playability can only be appreciated by playing it. I can't see myself ever parting with it.
Answer Dear Phil,
I'm not familiar with this particular model. If it's an Alvarez-Yairi, and not the more basic Alvarez, the serial number is from 1996. I don't know of a source for the regular Alvarez numbers.
In my opinion, the entire Alvarez line of acoustic guitars have been and still are good values. The Alvarez-Yairis are premium models that are fine instruments.
Around 1996, I bought a low-end Alvarez “Regent” acoustic for a little over $100 as a gift for a girlfriend, and after trying it, wondered about keeping it for myself, even though I have a ‘64 Martin D-28 and a few other very nice guitars!
Collectors and players are finally recognizing the older Alvarez-Yairi guitars as the gems that they are, and driving prices up on good-condition used A-Ys. The basic Alvarez line has not attracted the same attention, and even their better models don't usually command more than $300-$500 as used instruments, despite their being good-sounding and very playable instruments.
Sorry I can't tell you more about your particular model, but I hope this helps a little.
