About Bill Ruxton Expertise What kind of old guitar do I have? Is it valuable? How old is it? Where was it made? Is it worth repairing? Advice on buying new or used guitars, accessories, etc. [Note: While I can give some general info on approximate values of types of instruments, neither I nor anyone else can do an "appraisal" without actually seeing and handling the instrument] I have almost 40 years` experience as a player and afficianado. If I don`t have an answer myself, I can often refer people to other authoritative sources.
I just bought a 1969 Federico Garcia Classical guitar. What do you know about these guitars and how much in your opinion are they worth?
I figured I would direct these questions to an expert and I found your information on line.
Thank you
Answer Dear Mike,
Garcia guitars are not very well known in the USA, but are well-made instruments with excellent tone for their modest prices. I briefly owned one about 15 years ago, but traded it in towards a Gibson electric since I don't play classical style.
Any used guitar is only worth what some buyer is willing to pay for it. The value of yours depends largely on the specific model and its condition. Guitars with rosewood bodies are generally worth more than mahogany-bodied instruments, which are generally worth more and sound better than those of other woods such as maple or walnut. The older Garcia models made in Spain may be a bit more desirable than the later ones made in Japan, but the Asian versions are still very decent instruments at their price points of several hundred dollars. In my opinion, the few Garcia models I've seen are better values than comparably priced Yamaha classical models.
