Hey Bill, I got a Les Paul Custom too but without made in USA stamp, it got a serial number on the top back of the neck. It shows the date it was manifactured.

From the serial number you mentioned on top, your guitar was made on the 16th of Jan 1979.

It was the 571st guitar made in Nashville.

Dont worry, u got the original USA axe.

keep rocking and cheerz

I have a 79 les paul 3 pick up custom and my made in USA stamp is barley visible is about a good half inch bellow the serial number and I have to hold it in the right light to make it out, maybe yours is just faded to.

I have a 1979 Les Paul Custom Tobacco.

It also is missing the Made in USA stamp.

Serial # 7---9652

79  indicates 1979

652 indicates made in Nashville

I own a 1979 Les Paul Custom Sunburst, SN 70519617, so it was made about a month after the original poster's guitar, and at the same factory.  I does have a "MADE IN USA" stamp, but the stamp was not very deep.  In fact, the words "MADE IN" are one line above where the "USA" should be, and the "USA" is barely even visible.  If the original poster looks at his headstock closely, in very bright light, from several different angles, he may see a faint image.  Hope this helps.

Pardon me, but this is not accurate Bill.  Gibson Started producing the Original Silverburst from 1979-1982.  After that it was a different silverburst finish that didn't age the same.  THis guitar sounds fake.

What kind of old guitar do I have? Is it valuable? How old is it? Where was it made? Is it worth repairing? Advice on buying new or used guitars, accessories, etc. [Note: While I can give some general info on approximate values of types of instruments, neither I nor anyone else can do an "appraisal" without actually seeing and handling the instrument] I have almost 40 years` experience as a player and afficianado. If I don`t have an answer myself, I can often refer people to other authoritative sources.
