Experience
I have played guitar for 40 years and performed for over 30 years. During this time I have gained knowledge of the music business in Guitar repairs, makes and models, equipment for guitar and recording. By doing my own work, I have saved hundreds of dollars. I am not a legal expert, but I have knowledge of the music business and I keep up with the changes in the business.

Awards and Honors
I have songs that I wrote that have been recognized by Billboard and I had a top ten country song in Europe. I have a band that has worked together for 20years and we still make our living playing music. I love this business and like to help others learn about this exciting business.

Guitar Music - putting the music on paper

Expert: Patrick - 10/28/2008

Question
My son taught himself to play the guitar.  He has created lots of beautiful songs.  Is there a way to transfer what he is playing on the guitar to the computer and then it print out the chords or notes?  I have seen it done with keyboards. Know that MIDI is needed for keyboard composing.  He needs to get the music on paper and then copyright it.

Answer
Hi Robin,
Love to hear that! Talent should not be wasted. I've published lots of music that was never written to the music language. All though I will agree that music compositions that have no lyrics should be done that way, if the song has lyrics, a tape or CD with a copy of the lyrics is all you need to copyright the song. You can find applications at Library of Congress web site and download them or copy them. The price has gone up a little since I have used it, I believe it is 30.00 per. I always did a book of songs, 10 to 15 and copyrighted the whole book for the same price as one song. The material is still covered individually.
Music stores and computer stores sell programs that will write the notes as you play them on a key board or guitar. Good ones are not cheap. I do not know anything about them, so talk to lots of people. Music stores will have people in the know and they love to show off their knowledge, use them.

Hope this helps in some small way
Keep him interested. Take him to some shows!

Patrick
