Question i have a line 6 low down bass amp combo. i think its a 175W or 300 im not sure. it has a 15 inch speaker. i have wanted to try out my electric guitar, but i haven't got the time. i was wondering if it is possible to bypass the bass amp and use another guitar amp head with just the 15" speaker. and if that would actually work as a kind of half-stack. i've been playing guitar and bass for about five years, but i have never really had enough money to buy a decent amp. and after buying my bass amp, im a little short on cash and i can't afford a new cab and head.
Answer Hi Zeb,
Well first off.. I haven't had good luck playing my electric guitar through speakers over 12 inches. Most guitar amps are arranged with
1-12, 2-12's, 4-10's and so on. A 15 in speaker does not have the highs that you need to produce a clean guitar sound. Now I have friends that have build their own racks of guitar speakers using a 15 at the bottom, but with 12's and 10's and even horns, in the mix.
If you just want to have something to play your guitar through at home, I don't see any problems using the bass rig. Just remember that the sound will be midy and low with highs being non-exist.
To by pass your bass amp and use the speak configuration, you would need a way to switch the speaker wire back and forth from the guitar amp to back to the bass amp. It would take some time to do this each time, but it can be done by installing a 1/4 inch jack to your bass amp that is directly connected to the 15 in speaker,. Then you could turn off the bass amp, plug your power supply into that jack and play through the 15 in speaker using the guitar amp as supply. If you are not electrically inclined, I would not do this on your own. See someone down at your local music shop. Ask the electronic guy questions. You might find that you can afford a small practice amp, like a pig nose or equivalent.
Well I hope this makes sense to you.
