Guitar Music - difficult guitar to tune

Expert: Patrick - 4/8/2007

Question
Dear Patrick,  I,ve bought my grandsdn a 1/2 size guitar,
why wont it stay in tune? I tune it using a pitchpipe, minutes later it goes out of tune.Ive replaced its nylon string with steel ones, should I bin it and buy better quality?   kind regards  Brian.

Answer
Brian,

Without seeing the guitar, it's hard to make a educated statement. but I will say it sounds like it could be two things. The guitar you bought could be what I call a " Near-guitar". these guitars are usually for beginners, but they are only good for learning the construction and basics of the guitar and not made for playing, per say. IF it came with nylon strings and it is a half-size guitar, it is probably not made for sound. These types of guitars are good to find where the interest is in children, but you can't expect to get good sound from them.
2. If the guitar is a good student guitar and you paid more then 100.00 dollars for it, then I would say that you are either using the wrong gauge strings or you haven't straighten the strings out enough for them to stay in tune.

If you play and you still can't get the guitar to act right, I'd take it back and maybe up grade a little. Fender has some good deals in beginner guitars for 99 to 120 dollars all day long. There are other brands out there too, that play well and don't cost an arm and leg.

Hope this helps

Good luck

Patrick
