You are here: Experts > Recreation/Outdoors > Paintball > Guns, Firearms, Projectile Weapon Sports > Convert semi-auto Rem. 742 to pump--any feedback?
Expert: Paul Edward Zukowski - 10/31/2009
Question QUESTION: Twice at range tests, separate sessions, my used (got from good dealer) Rem. 742 in 30-06 double-tapped BANGBANG! Doesn't do it every time, but once is too many. I fired it before and after (single-shot only, after) and all else was fine. (Darn--I just thought that I should have checked that it was still cocked after each round, to be sure it was not trying to doubletap more often. I think it was, however; slide resistance was as if cocked when new cartridge was put in.)
I took it to a gunsmith after the 2d doubletap.
Have you any experience with this, or ideas of cause and fix? Gun was cleaned before each event. Internal parts show little wear, though external finish does--probably was a hunting gun carried around but shot little.
Thanks.
ANSWER: Sorry hit the wrong button.
Its likily a problem with the hammer or firing pin.
Thats just a guess.
The gunsmith should be able to figure it out.
No have not heard of a problem with this model.
---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------
QUESTION: Thanks for considering the first question.
Apparently doubletap is rare, for you and Web didn't find others with it. How does this sound: If my smith can't find a problem, I will contact Remington about it--and if that fails, I'll convert it to a pump. I see that several online smiths do that for $175-$229. I'd hate to lose the semi-auto function, but can't have doubletaps!
Answer You might be able to find a used Remington Pump rifle for not a lot more money than the conversion.
Is there a reason you want this specific rifle?
Seems the easiest way out if Remington has no answers,
why not just sell this one and buy another one.
I don't see any reason why you could not convert it.
