Question I just purchased a Winchester Model 70 7MM Rem. Mag. Serial # G162859 Composite Stock with a W.A. Simmons Whitetail Classic Scope 3.5-10X40. They both seem to be in very good condition.
I was trying to find any history and fair value of it to make sure that I received a good deal. I’m not a big hunter, but that’s only because I didn’t have anything to hunt with. Also, how dependable are these type rifles? Thanks for any help that you can give me.
Sincerely,
Michael Firster
Answer First, with regard to your particular rifle, just as the link you clicked on said in bold letters, I cannot tell you about the history of your particular gun, or its value.
The Model 70 was introduced by Winchester in 1936. Along with the Remington 700, rifles of this iteration have been used for decades as sniper rifles by the U.S. military (though other brands have been introduced since the new millennium).
A good specimen of the rifle is rugged, dependable, and accurate.
Many model 70 fans consider the pre - '64 to be the best specimen. While some improvements were made after that, many of the changes were done to keep costs down.
Winchester stopped producing the rifle in 2006. FNH USA took up the design the next year, producing a modern rifle based on the pre-'64 design.
