Guns, Firearms, Projectile Weapon Sports - responsable for missing gun?

Expert: GCH - 10/25/2009

Question
During my recent divorce, a 9mm handgun has come up "missing", I purchased it from a gun shop, and the gun is registered in my name. Can I be held responsible for the use of the gun? I had the serial number recorded, but have not been able to get my hands on my records as of yet, if they still exist. I am in Ohio.
Thanks
Tim

Answer
If someone commits a crime with the gun, you cannot ordinarily be held responsible for the crime someone else commits. If someone stole your car, borrowed it without your knowledge, or borrowed it with your knowledge, and committed a crime with it you would not be in any way responsible unless you had knowledge of the crime ahead of time and were complicit in it.

Still, as a precaution, I would call the police and them take a report on a missing handgun. The shop you bought it from will have records of the serial number.
