Question
i have been in tumbling classes for 4-5 years and still cant do a back handspring by myself. i tell myself i cant do it and i can do it on the trampoline by myself and i have done it only a few times by myself but i just cant get it every time. My coach will try and try to make me do it by myself and she pressures me and i don't go.. i just cant get over it and do a back handspring by myself!!! HELP

Answer
"I can" is the answer to your question. Saying "I can't" tells your brain that you can't do it and it programs your body to respond to your wish. When you want to turn on a light switch you tell your hand to reach for the light switch and it does, then you tell it to turn the light on and it lifts the switch to turn on the light. Once you learn what to do in a back hand spring like you have done on the trampoline, you tell your body to do a back hand spring and it does it. Then you go to the floor or the mat and tell your body you "can't" and it does that too.
Try an in between step go to a soft mat or a tumble track and practice there until you feel comfortable.

But NEVER say "I CAN'T" your body listens and responds to what you tell it. In fact say, think, and believe that you CAN!

In our gym our coach used to make us do 10 pushups every time we said the word "can't". Boy did I have strong arms at first.

Keep practicing where you are comfortable doing it  and build up slowly to harder mats but always tell your body what you want it to do.

Also try getting someone to video you and study what you are doing and tell yourself to correct the things you are doing wrong in the video. It will help you to see yourself. Also study other videos of other back hand springs that are good to compare so your brain can see the difference in what you are doing and you can focus on doing it correctly.

Good luck and let me know How you are doing.
