Gymnastics - Horrible Wrist flexiblity

Expert: Robert Davis - 10/25/2009

Question
Hi Robert, I hope you can help.

This isn't much about gymmnastics but, I find it painful and difficult to stretch my wrists. My palms don't touch the floor when I do a simple baby or hand-glide. One of my inner knuckles hurt when I try to stretch my wrists, and it seems like my bone in my hand is preventing it being stretched.

When I put pressure on my wrist stretching it palm down, I see my hand & wrist area muscles spazz out, not to mention it hurts a bit to stretch my right wrist.

What gives, I want to improve them?

Answer
Hi JT,
It looks like your wrists are about as flexible as mine.  :)

I've found that the more I workout, the more I need to stretch.  If I don't keep up, specifically with my wrists, I lose flexibility and tumbling and pommel horse becomes painful for me.  If it is at that point for you then I would suggest backing off the tumbling, pommel horse, and anything else that puts pressure on your wrists and do a lot of hanging to decompress them.  Also, when you stretch take it easy and take your time.

When your wrists feel better and get more flexible you can start using them again for stressful activities, but if you don't take a break it will take a long time to make progress and you may get very discouraged about it.  I just wrote an article about flexibility at http://www.goodfeelingplace.com/the-key-to-flexibility-is-untimed-stretching/, you might want to take a look at that as well.
Regards,
Robert
