Question
I have an 9 year old son who is on level 5 and have been told he is extremely talented in gymnastics. He began competing last season and won the Louisiana State Championship in Level 4. My question is... how does he get to the olympics if his gym is not one that emphasizes success? Moving to another gym is impossible. Are there (non-college) scouts for men's gymnastics?

If you would like to see him, here is a video link.

Answer
Kimberly,

The best program for very talented 8-12 year olds is USAG's Future Stars Program. You can find information about it on this site:

http://usa-gymnastics.org/men/pages/overview_futurestars.php

Gymnasts learn a different set of routines and compete them in the fall (Sept-Nov). You should know that this program is NOT easy by any stretch. Most FS athletes train 15-20 hrs. per week. But if your son's goals are that high, this is the program for him.

My advice would be to call around to gyms in your area and see if they offer it. Failing that you could call your mens' USAG state director for Louisiana, James Clement<gymna1@gmal.com> and ask him to recommend a gym.

Best of luck,

Dean Dryer
