Gymnastics - level 7 beam routine

Expert: Karen M. Goeller - 10/20/2009

Question
My daughter's beam routine consists of a beautiful two back walkover series, switch leap, twinkle toes.  She is struggling on a back step out - can do but is scared without a spot.  Can she do something else and still get full value?  Does a round off give full value?  Anything else?

Answer
Hello Carrie,

Yes, a roundoff is another flight skill that many gymnasts use, but it is up to your daughter's coach to decide what skills go into the routine. Your daughter's coach probably knows the level 7 rules well and she knows your daughter. Even though the roundoff is the same type of skill (flight) as the back handspring, it is not as progressive as the back handspring. The back handspring is a necessary skill for optional gymnasts because there are many other backward moving skills that gymnasts must perform on beam. Skipping a basic skill would make learning the more advanced skills, such as the layout-step-out, much more difficult. Gymnasts must be able to perform the back handspring in all of the levels, from levels 7-elite, so your daughter should become comfortable this skill in the beginning optional levels. It is normal for a gymnast to be afraid of new skills. The back handspring on balance beam is often the skill level 7 gymnasts have trouble performing due to fears. Your daughter just needs more practice. She should be performing at least 10 back handsprings on beam during each practice, as long as she is not injured or ill.

Your daughter should practice visualization to become more comfortable with skills. Mental training is extremely important for gymnasts. It helps them with confidence and technique. You may find my article on Visualization and Mental Blocks to be very interesting. Here is the link to that article...  http://www.gymnasticsstuff.com/article-visualization.htm

There are many other articles on that website too with topics such as cast handstand, giant swings on uneven bars, split leaps, Tsukahara (tsuk) vaults, staying on the beam, and many more. Here is the page with the full list of articles available for you... http://www.gymnasticsstuff.com/GymnasticsArticles.htm

If you are in or near NJ I offer private gymnastics training. I help gymnasts with specific skills, strength, and flexibility. The information on that service is at... http://www.BestGymnasticsTraining.com

Best of luck...
