Gymnastics - switching gyms

Expert: Karen M. Goeller - 10/5/2009

Question
My daughter is a level 5 gymnast and has started her competition season, however she is not doing very well by her standards. So, she is considering the idea of switching gyms(she has been thinking of this for a while but these past few meets have put this to the front of her mind) and I have no objections to it, this is her career, not mine. But I was wondering if you are allowed to switch gyms mid season and compete for the other gym in a month or 2, but still in the same season. I can't find the answer anywhere online, help?!?

Answer
Hello Hilary,

Excellent question! There is no rule stating that a gymnast cannot change gyms. Gymnasts change gyms whenever necessary, even in the middle of the competition season.

Your daughter should be in a gym where there have been plenty of successful high level gymnasts in the past. Try calling a few other gyms and see if you can get a trial workout to see how it goes. It is very important to be in a program that suits her personality and goals. Some gymnasts do not do well in serious gyms while others thrive in the serious atmospheres so be careful in choosing a new coach and gym.

If you are in NJ I offer conditioning and private training for gymnasts. I can also recommend a gym or two. The information on my training services is at... http://www.BestGymnasticsTraining.com.

I hope this helps. Feel free to contact me again with additional questions. Best of luck...
