Gymnastics - Beam!!

Expert: Dean Dryer - 6/15/2009

Question
i am going into level 7 and beam have never been my avent but i want to get better at it but for some reason i can't get over the height factor and backwalk overs are really hard to get because i feel like im scared but on the low beam its really easy and simple but on the high beam "i just can't" its weird maybe  u can explain why this is!!

thanx abby!!

Answer
Abby,

If you have a beam height where you don't have fear problems on the back walkover, then the solution is simple. If you have a height adjustable high beam you crank it down to where your aren't scared. Then you incrementally crank it higher (doing enough back walkovers to feel comfortable at each new height). Eventually you will be at regulation height with no fear. It's just a matter of patience and diligence.

If you don't have an adjustable high beam, just start stacking panel mats under the practice beam you use to make it higher and higher.

You may notice that I haven't addresses why this happens to you, the truth is that knowing why (which I don't really know you well enough to tell you why) is not nearly as important as solving the problem, so try to remain focused on the solution and you'll do better.

Hope that helps.

Best of Luck and stay safe,

Dean Dryer
