Gymnastics - Feet Protection While Training Bar Skills

Expert: Jack Leonard - 6/19/2009

Question
Hi Jack,

My daughter is training for level 9.  At meets, we have seen girls wearing what looks like socks with foam blocks.  They warm up and train with them; however, they do not compete with them.  What are they?  Where can you find them?  My daughter is training a pak-salto and she has banged her feet occasionally on the high bar.  Are they useful for training bar changes and release skills?  Would you recommend them?  Is there any protection for feet while training?  Thank you!

Answer
Hello Suzanne,
I am glad to help you.  I have seen many creative ways to pad the feet/ankles.  Elbow pads work or just plain high density foam taped on to the foot with a sock cover.  Experiment and see what is less distracting for your daughter.  Good luck on your quest and stay safe.  Take Care – Jack Leonard
