Gymnastics - Im terrified of doing backhand springs

Expert: Kevin Dixon-Jackson - 6/23/2009

Question
I need help getting over my backhandspring. Im terrified of going backwards and every time im about to do it i bail and fall into my spotters arms. I need help on getting over this fear and also flipping. My coaches say once i get over this fear and just do it i will have it. I can't even flip over doing a backbend on a trampoline im so scared. i need help, like a lot of help. I need this backhand spring for cheer.

Answer
Hi Jessica,

This is a common problem and is due to the fact that backward rotation involves a blind landing. This means you cannot see where you will touch down until the last split second.
In order to overcome this fear you need to do two things.
Firstly constantly visualize (imagine) yourself doing this move until you can easily and at any time imagine it.
Secondly there are many ways of being supported while doing this (hand spotting, holding, belt; spotter mat or rig in the trampoline) talk about it with your coach and find a support method you are confident with. Numerous repetitions over several sessions will be needed then you can move to less supportive methods (hand spotting) but keep visualizing.
Finally YOU have to tough it out. There are a lot of blind moves ahead and if you are not tough enough you may be in the wrong sport.

Be brave.

Best wishes
Kevin
