Question
I am a cheerleading coach whose girls go to a gymnastics class once a week.My question is how do I become certified in gymnastics to help them when I'm with them.I also have been taking classes for over 6 years.I would consider myself an advanced tumbler.

Answer
Caroline,

There are two things your can get from USAG as far as official certifications. You can get the USAG safety certification. For that your would have to become either a professional or instructor member of USAG and then you would have to find a safety course in your area. You can get details from the USAG website http://usa-gymnastics.org/membership/pages/

You could also get PDP(profession development program) certified from USAG. You can find the info in the same place.

However, depending on the gym owner, these might not be a requirement to work at your daughter's gym.

My advice would be so simply talk to the gym owner and ask if you can help out with the classes. You should be prepared for the gym owner to say no though. In my experience (30 years of it) parents helping with the coaching can lead to problems and conflicts which a gym owner may not want to open himself up to.

Best of luck with it,

Dean Dryer
