Gymnastics - Trouble at competitions

Expert: Chris Eilertsen - 9/22/2009

Question
I just can't win anything at competitions. I just can't place in anything at competitions. I had a comp on Sunday, 2nd last comp for the year. I got nothing, my team came 8th and I did really bad there. For example: My floor score was 13.05/15.4 I had 2.35 points deducted off it. My bars score was 9.95/14.0 I had 4.05 marks taken off it. My beam score was 11.15/15.4 I fell twice and I got 4.25 deducted off it. My vault score was 13.2/15 I had 1.8 taken off it. So why do I get these bad scores? Why can't I get 14.5's on floor like the other girls do? Why can't I get 14.65's on bars like the other girls do? Why do I pike my vault and don't pop off the vault when the other girls do? How can I fix this? I do strength at home but I still get these same scores, they are so bad. As this was a big competition, they only gave apparatus placing's to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. And in the all around they gave out trophies to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd all around. I would really love to win some medals and trophies but I don't think that is possible at the moment! Please give me some advice! I really need help!

Answer
Ellen,
I have never met you but you sound from the brief paragraph of introduction remarkably like myself after many competitions that I did poorly at. I even had several teammates giving me encouragement like "claw foot" and "hook toe", they were commenting on how good my toe point wasn't.... I even went so far as to sleep at night with 20 pound weights hanging from them to help them bend to a better toe point. My coaches even forbid me to use the word "can't" in the gym......I did tend to overuse it. This negative criticism seemed to make me even try harder.
One of the best things that helped me was meditation, and learning to relax even while staying focused on my routine. slow deep breathing and deep concentration are not easy to accomplish when your on deck for your next vault or bar routine and even harder when you are working on top of a slim beam. It is hard to relax while powering up for your first or last pass across the tumbling mat but it is essential for focused concentration. Have you read any meditation books, or any books on relaxation? I'm not talking about sleeping better at night I'm talking about books on obtaining inner peace through meditation. You are way beyond the average person if you are scoring in the high 9s so you need to branch above average type of preparedness...The Beatles were at the top of their profession and they saute more... Creativity requires inspiration many times to be inspired and attain that 98 + score there needs to be more than normal focus and to attain that takes super control of 110% of your thoughts... sounds tough it is but not impossible. Good breathing, good diet, good rest. and also practice relaxing, (meditation) can all help you to focus better on your routine at the instant you need it to achieve the score you want. Forget being nervous and practice becoming one with your routine. As funny as it may seem Chevy Chase in Caddy shack wasn't far off with his chant while putting...
It isn't easy nor does it just happen you have to practice relaxing your brain so you can focus and complete your routine, just like you practice your skills in the routines...

Good luck I hope this helps.
