Gymnastics - stand up from bridge

Expert: Pam Rafe-Borges - 9/7/2009

Question
I hope you can help! My daughter is 6 and is in a gymnastic squad, she has
mastered so many moves very quickly, but there is one that she is stuck on for
some reason - she cant stand up from bridge. Shes done it once or twice, but now
cant do it again. Any tips for the technique required so i can help her practice
at home? They dont seem to be giving her tips at gymnastics, just let her
practice, and she cant seem to get it anymore. Would be very grateful for your
help. Louise x

Answer
Hi Louise,

She can practice from her knees.  In high kneeling position, there are 3 drills.  Straight body hinges (rock from the knees as far back as she can get up from).  Then the drill is done with a head release (looking back) then arch, then rock.  THe last being doen the same as the 2nd with arms stretched by the ears.  The goal is to go as far back as you can successfully get back up from.  But don't overdo ANY arch skills or she will hurt her back.

Pam
