Hair Color/Brassy Hair color

I have hair my hair done both at home and at a salon and it always comes out brassy orange-ish.  I have light brown hair with - I assume - red undertones but I am so frustrated I can't seem to get it right.  I expect when I do it at home that the results aren't going to be great but when I go to a salon and get the same results for considerably more money it's frustrating.   What I would like is light brown with blond highlights - I have brought in pictures but always end up the same.  What can I do?  Is it just not possible?

Thank you!

What is the problem? Are you changing your own hair color and adding highlights? You are not giving me enough information to answer this question.
1st...are we changing your own hair color?
2nd...adding highlights to previously colored hair?
3rd...working on your own natural tones?

If you are happy with your own hair color, which you describe as a light brown hair, than adding highlights and using the proper lightener should give you the desired blonde highlights. This sounds like a no brainer to me...I don't know what you look like or what is being done.

I need more information here please. Send me a picture of your hair. Or simply explain to me if the highlights are being done on your own light brown hair (Which tells me you are already where you need to be.) and than you are adding your highlights.

Anyway, if you are getting a reddish tone with your highlights, the lightener is not strong enough or its not staying on your hair long enough (30/45 minutes no heat...or 20/30 minutes with heat)

Fill me in....
