Question
Hi, I was diagnosed Hypothyroid on Feb.2008. Started taking syntroid and ever since I noticed more hair loss;also, since January I've been lossing hair on my eyebrows, mostly the right one, and they ichted too. My dermatologist gave me alclometazone cream and it kind of help the itch and hair grew back. After six weeks I went back and he seemed pleased that the hair was back, so he gave me Ketokonazole shampoo for the itch (I have a small patches of dried skin on my head), he thought they might be related. I've used the shampoo, stopped using the cream, but the itch came back (also on the sides of face) even worse and I started lossing my eyebrow hair again, first in little patches but now really all over the right one, the other eyebrow is way thicker but is loosig hair slowly. Please tell me what I can do. Can my synthroid medication be the cause? I'd appreciate any advise you can give me.

Answer
Hello Silvia: Hair loss and eyebrow loss (especially on the outer edge) are symptoms of thyroid disorder. Unfortunately hair loss can also be a side effect of certain thyroid medications including synthroid. Medication induced hair loss usually begins 1-4 months after it is in your system or when the dosage is increased. Essential oil scalp treatments are very effective for itching scalp, fungal infection, hair loss and most other scalp conditions. Ketokonazole is a synthetic anti-fungal agent. I personally prefer using natural remedies before using medications. Essential oils such as tea tree and others are potent and effect anti-fungal agents that do not come with the adverse side effects of synthetic medication.
