Question i have had chronic te for three years as i have watched my iron go up and down due to heavy periods. i have taken slow fe and my numbers were pretty good but on a routine iron check my tibc came back low so i went to a hemotologist and he told me the slow fe didnt work...just stop taking it so i listened...six weeks later my iron was cut in half (borderline anemic) and ferritin in half. what number should our ferritin be to grow hair? due to his incompentence i am going to start getting iron shots as i have struggled with constipation taking the slow fe for 3 years and used milk of magnesia to help and now found out that interferes with iron. suggestions on the ferritin? could having low iron trigger TE to turn into aga? does saw palmetto help your hair not to minaturize?...my testosterone is low so ive been thinking about stopping the saw palmetto as i hear it interferes with iron absorbtion. help!! thank you
Answer Hi Patti: It is possible for telogen effluvium to be a catalyst for developing androgenetic alopecia in those who are genetically predisposed. Low ferritin levels are common in women with androgenetic alopecia as well as telogen effluvium. But there are also many people with low ferritin levels who do not have any hair loss issues. Normal ferritin levels in women range from 12 to 150 ng/mL. Women with hair loss are often encouraged to strive for 60-70 ng/mL Increasing ferritin levels is often a slow process requiring consistency. Spirulina and chlorella are excellent sources of natural iron (not synthetic) These products will not cause constipation. Sprirulina and chlorella are also loaded with many other high quality nutrients that are vital for healthy hair growth and overall health. Saw palmetto is used to help inhibit miniaturization due to dht. Saw palmetto should not be taken within the same time period as iron as it is thought to interfere with iron absorption. Tannins in tea also interferes with iron. Vitamin C helps with iron absorption.
