Question Hi Melanie,i've just turned 17 and for the past year or so i've noticed that after showering a small clump of hair is always left behind in the bath. I ignored it for a while but then noticed that the hair at the back of my head was getting thinner. It's noticeable straight after I wash it as my hair is much thinner but when it dries it's slightly better and you don't notice it as much. This area is also quite sensitive and I avoid trying to brush it if I can. When I was around 10 I fell and hit it but it seemed to have healed up and everything was ok. Now I don't know what to do. I've told my mum about it but she said it isn't that bad. Im very self consious about it and won't wear my hair down ever. I feel that if it keeps falling out i soon won't have any hair left and am really worried about it. I'm wondering should I go see someone about it or is there any special medication or treatment I could get to help or fix it. Would really appreciate advice on this if you can, Fiona.
Answer Hi Fiona: Teenage hair loss is becoming more common. There are so many possible causes that it is often difficult to pinpoint the exact cause. Because your scalp is sensitive in the area in which the hair loss seems most prevalent, it may be helpful to have your scalp examined. You can start by having someone you know look at the scalp in in good lighting to see if there is any scaling, flaking, inflammation etc. A dermatologist or trichologist would be best qualified to analyze for any type of infection or disorder.
Some of the more common causes of teenage hair loss include medications, birth control, recent vaccination, stress, trauma, hormonal changes, exposure to toxins/allergens, extreme dieting/weight loss etc.
Essential oil scalp massage treatments are very effective for many hair loss conditions. You can read more about teenage hair loss and using essential oils for female hair loss at the links provided below.
