Question I am 39 years old and started taking Yaz three months ago. I have not been on birth control since the birth of my first child six yrs ago. I have a 4 yr old and 1 yr old. I have noticed the same type of dramatic hair loss that i experienced when i went through hormonal changes after stopping breast feeding with all three kids. My hair just went back to normal after it got very thick with the pregnancies. I am also noticing baby fine hair growing at my temples. Can this be the Yaz that is causing my hair loss? Neither parent has hair loss.
Answer Hello Courtney: Yes it is very likely that the birth control has triggered your hair loss. Hair loss from oral contraceptives is becoming much more common. Any hormonal change including changes induced by birth control can cause hair loss. Also, oral contraceptives often deplete or interfere with the absorption of certain nutrients which are necessary for healthy hair growth. Medication induced hair loss often begins 1-3 months beginning use, so the time line does indicate a strong possibility.
Starting or stopping any medication including birth control can cause hair loss. Sometimes when the medication is continued, the body adjusts and the hair growth cycle resumes normally. This does not seem to be the case with the particular birth control you're using according to most of the women who have contacted me. Please research this medication in regard to hair loss and other side effects to decide if you wish to continue.
Sincerely, Melanie Vonzabuesnig
