Hair Loss - DHT

Expert: Michael S. Fisher, Ph.D., M.D. - 2/26/2006

Question
Can a man stop his body from producing DHT, by totally blocking out all sexual thoughts and abstaining from all sexual activity?

I heard that DHT is the leading cause of hair loss in men, and that DHT is produced by the male body as a response to typical male thoughts and behaviors, right? please don't send me advertisements, I'm not looking to buy any DHT blockers.

Answer
DHT is formed from Testosterone in the scalp by two enzymes. All men have these enzymes and all men have testosterone and these enzymes are not regulaged by thoughts or behaviors. If your assumption were correct then all ministers would never have hair loss and we know that is not the case. Even the Tibetan monks loose their hair. Thus, blocking sexual thoughts will not inhibit male pattern hair loss.
