Hair Loss - Diet and hair loss

Expert: Michael S. Fisher, Ph.D., M.D. - 2/27/2006

Question
Is it possible for a man to prevent his hair from falling out, by eating the right foods (organic foods, all natural foods) and avoiding unhealthy foods, smoking, and alcohol? Basically, can the right diet prevent male pattern baldness from setting in?

I read a book, which claimed that the right foods (healthy foods, all natural foods) will prevent male pattern baldness, the book also claimed that it is possible to regrow some of your lost hair by eating the right foods! is this a false claim, or is there some truth to it?

Answer
There is no science showing that eating the right foods can help male pattern hair loss. However if you smoke and drink in excess that will affect the hair, nails and the skin. Male pattern hair loss is genetic and results from the formation of DHT. If you inhibit DHT then you will not have male pattern hair loss.
